The reason I decided to take English this fall semester is because it is a required course for my career path. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree and one of the many required classes that must be completed prior to achieving my goal is this English course. This English class is primarily a requirement for school but I hope to obtain new knowledge as well. What I hope to gain from taking this course is a better understanding of how to write correctly, to be grammatically correct that is. Also, I hope to learn from others by taking this course, not only the instructor but my fellow students.
I want to step out of my comfort zone and not be so timid, so that I am able to understand how others think and comprehend this subject. As of right now I have no set expectations for this course, I only hope that it is new information and that it gives me a better understanding of how I need to write and think as far as English goes. Being in English plus has helped me grow as a writer, a thinker and it also has been a challenge. My expectations for myself was to get a 4. I had previous experience on writing the way we did in class. I learned it in high school, but my grammar has been an obstacle. During this quarter I learned how to structure a sentence, how to be more open-minded and also how to make my writing stand out. This class taught me how to write my view in a more professional way.
Throughout my academic carrer, I have had a history of struggling with English classes. I was excited to take English because I believed it would most effectively teach me the basics of successful writing and communication. In high school, I developed mediocre writing skills and struggled with reading comprehension so I knew these topics would pose a problem in any English class I take. Despite the fact that I was in AP Language in high school, I learned very little and did not improve my writing and communication skills as much as I would have liked. In English , I would like to change that and enhance my time management skills, grammar skills, and overall writing ability. As I entered into English , I had the expectation of writing many unimaginative papers, while stressing if I was going to be able to complete my college and high school tasks.
On top of all that, I was afraid of having a monotonous, boring professor. I soon realized that these assumptions were all invalid. I managed my tasks by completing everything in a timely manner and needed all the advice I could get from an outstanding English professor. When I enter English in the fall, I have the expectation of being in a more language based composition class. My goals for English are to continue to improve my writing skills, complete my work on time, and obtain information that I can use as I proceed in college.
After I accomplish English , I hope to be able to be an improved writer and be able to convey ideas more. Before starting English I was so excited because I knew who class I wanted to take; but, his class was full. I was a very sad cookie. Then my friend Josh told me her knew a professor that was better than the one I wanted and that I would love her class. In my English class I evolved as a writer, experienced a lot of new things, made a few mistakes, and learned from them. English might seem like an easy course to take for some students. For other students such as myself, English was one of the classes I feared and procrastinated on taking.
Coming from an ESL background, English was the class I have always struggled with the most. I prefer the correct answers to be facts and universal. Creativity is not my forte. The process of putting your thoughts down on paper in an organized manner, with correct punctuation, and citing works used, seemed like a complicated, tedious task before taking English this summer. My major, nursing, will require a great amount of communication skills. I believe English will help me further develop my communication skills. It is also very important to me to challenge myself and overcome obstacles to make myself a better writer.
I found that high school English classes were moderately easy because there were no challenges set forth. I would rather take a class that makes me put forth hard work to earn a good grade and will teach me things I need to know to succeed, than a class I can get an easy A in that teaches me nothing. I hope one of the main principles I get from this class is how to become a better writer. I expect that this class will be a challenge and will teach me things I need to know to. During this semester, the realization of my past was that I have often skimmed through parts of the writing process to get the job done. Not being an avid reader often hindered my writing abilities. This class most definitely made me realize that the entire writing process is important and having peer reviews also helped significantly and certainly made a difference in the result of my work.
When selecting English , I knew I would be challenged, but to what extent I was unsure. If like past English courses that were taken learning to write essays would be the goal. Once realizing that my work would be shared with others, providing informed information. Starting this year, I thought English was just going to be another general education requirement I needed to have in order to graduate. English has never been my favorite subject, so I guess it is safe to say that I was not super excited about this class.
However, this class turned out to be different then I thought. It turned out to be more useful then I originally thought. English was both helpful and fairly simple because of what what I learned, the effort I put in and how prepared I was. The adventure has been a lot easier than I at first anticipated. In any case, I am happy that I am taking the class and learning from it. In the beginning it appeared somewhat hard however I was resolved to compel my way through this class regardless of what difficulties I needed to persevere. The process of putting my thoughts down on paper in an organized manner, with correct punctuation, and citing works used, seemed like a complicated, tedious task before taking English this summer.
I entered this class with a general idea of what was going to be expected of me and what I was going to have to accomplish in order to be successful, and I credit the extent of my preparation for this course to the extensive instruction and critiques provided for me by my high school teachers. By them I was taught the fundamentals of composition which allowed me the time and energy to more deeply understand the intricacies of good writing which I would be taught in college. Although I learned many new concepts in English , I feel as though I had a stable foundation to build on and enhance with more refined skills.
Throughout English thus far, I can certainly say that my writing skills have been tested and tried. Writing for fun and composing rhetorical essays for a college-level English class are vastly different styles and require contrasting attitudes, voices, and points of view for each. Before writing essays of the former diction, I must admit that I did not understand the rhetorical strategies and had no idea there even was a rhetorical triangle. The assignments included in this portfolio show the advancements I have made in my writing with an academic tone. Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others.
My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally. I am a senior student, only one last semester to complete my bachelor degree, a step away from medical school. I will leave San Antonio and move-in with my husband in Lubbock, Texas. I will take part in a post-baccalaureate program at Texas Tech Health Science Center, and we will attend the same college while I prepared for medical school.
I was smiling on that uncomfortable library chair, picturing all those ideas while spacing out on my inorganic chemistry book after long hours studying for finals. One semester away from taking a big step toward my goals, my heartbeat kept speeding out of excitement; little did I know at the time. Essay Topics Writing. The dreaded English Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can.
Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine-tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my strongest subject right after. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills.
This course will give me more time at work and more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English I hope to gain more writing experience in. Get Access. Decent Essays. English Essay Words 3 Pages. English Essay.
